This is my first Setlist update. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments box and I’ll see if I can enlighten you!
Morning Worship
All songs chosen by the Officers who also led the worship.
Come in My Lord -
Led by the brass band, using the tune ‘Diademater’ (Crown Him With Many Crowns.
All Heaven Declares -
Accompanied by Piano and Bass Guitar.
Jesus Where’er Thy People Meet -
Accompanied by Piano and Bass Guitar. This song fit well in the theme which our Officer (pastor) was speaking on in the morning – the place for the Mercy Seat in the Army and it’s biblical foundation.
Is There A Heart – (All Your Anxiety)
Accompanied by Piano and Bass Guitar. This was the response, with a particularly appropriate chorus:
All your anxiety, all your care,
Bring to the mercy seat, leave it there,
Never a burden he cannot bear,
Never a friend like Jesus.
Be Still For The Presence Of The Lord -
Accompanied by Piano and Bass Guitar.
They Shall Come From The East -
This is one of the songs from the Salvation Army Musicals by Gowans and Larsson. A song writing team who have provided the Army with some fantastic songs over the years.
Evening Worship
A member of the church chose the songs, lead worship and preached. The message being about stepping out in faith, using the story of Peter stepping out the boat and walking on the water.
There’s A Path That’s Sometimes Thorny -
Led by the Band. Words by Sidney Cox with the words of the Chorus
By the pathway of duty
Flows the river of God’s grace.
By the pathway of duty
Flows the river of God’s grace.
The theology of this song is in my mind a little questionable, but the overall message of service to God’s higher purpose is spot on.
Ask! Ask! Ask! / All That You Need Is A Miracle
Accompanied by Piano & Bass Guitar. Another couple Gowans and Larsson choruses. The first based on the well know scripture in Matthew
Ask! Ask! Ask! and it shall be given;
Seek! Seek! Seek! and you’re sure to find;
Knock! Knock! Knock! and the door will open,
For God! God! God! is so good and kind, O yes,
So ask! Ask! Ask! and it shall be given;
Seek! Seek! Seek! and you’re sure to find;
Knock! Knock! Knock! and the door will open,
For God! God! God! is so good and kind.
The second
All that you need is a miracle,
And all that you need can be yours,
All that you need is available
The moment you turn to the Lord.
Valiant Soldier Marching To The Fray (Keep In Step) -
Led by the band. A particularly “Army” song, with plenty of military / war imagery.
The band played an instrumental arrangement around the Songster (Choir) song There Is A Saviour.
Who Comes To Me, The Saviour Said -
Accompanied by Piano and Bass.
When We Walk With The Lord -
Led by the band.
GSY – God Gave Us His Son -
The singing group sang this song a couple times to sandwich the prayer time.
I’m Going To Make My Life Into A Melody -
Led by the band. This song was written by Flora Larsson with music by her husband (of Gowans and Larsson).
The band played the tune of the song ‘Power In The Blood’ at the end of Worship.
Overall both meetings were fairly traditional in style and content. The songs, especially in the evening, skewed very much towards the Army tradition, with many home grown songs. It’s nice to keep hold of the Army theology and imagery particularly in our worship. If you want to read more about our worship philosophy and approach I’ve written a post here.
